Citrus limetta, a species of citrus, is called Mosambi, sweet lime, sweet lemon or sweet limetta. It has its origin in South Asia and then cultivated in Mediterranean basin. Citrus limetta is a fruit bearing tree in which the fruits start to yield from five year old trees and continues to yield up to twenty years. It grows in tropical and sub-tropical climates. The fruit is sweet and less acidic when compared to other citrus fruits. The unripe fruit is green in color and turns yellow as it ripens. It is consumed by people all over the world either as a whole fruit after removing the thick peel or in the form of juice as a substitute diet.
Mosambi has substantial amounts of vitamin C and a small quantity of carbohydrates.
100 gm. fruit provides 43 calories of energy, 9.3 gm. carbohydrate, and 1.7 gm. Sugar, 50 mg (60 % Recommended Daily Amount- RDA) vitamin C, dietary fiber 0.47gm, potassium 490 mg. (10% RDA), calcium 40 mg (4% RDA), phosphorous 30 mg. (4% RDA), iron 0.7 mg (5% RDA) and very small quantities of fat and protein. It a high water content fruit with 88 gm. of water in 100 gm. fruit.
