The sacred lotus is more than just a pretty flower or a flower that you shower the gods with. This flower has innumerable health benefits. Known as Nelumbo nucifera among the science community, this flower has carved an important place for itself in the ancient Ayurveda and Siddha texts. The various parts of the sacred lotus have various health benefits. while the root and the petals are the most used parts of the flower, its leaves and stamen also find an important place in native medicine.
In this recipe, we use the petals of sacred lotus flower to cure premature graying. Most common cause of premature graying of hair is ‘pitta’. In Ayurveda, we categorize ailments into different categories, ‘pitta’ being one of them. This concoction (Kashayam in Tamil) made using sacred lotus can reduce pitta and help to cure the condition.
This concoction has various other benefits as well. It can reduce bad cholesterol levels in the body and can keep heart healthy. A tea made using lotus flowers is a great anti-depressant. It can relieve stress, reduce anxiety and soothe the mind. It can hence also promote better sleep in those suffering from depression. Lotus flowers are a rich source of Vitamin C and thereby can fight against various diseases and are a good source of anti-oxidants. An external application of the petals of lotus flower can promote healthy youthful skin. This remedy can also cure acne with regular application.
This drink can be consumed by anybody who is aged 8 years and above. Since lotus is also good for overall health, it is an excellent choice as a health drink too.
Note: This remedy may cause constipation in some. Hence, increase your water intake during the period.
Avoid pitta causing foods in order to ensure that the remedy has good effects. Regular application of oil on the scalp and hair followed by a relaxing bath can also help.
- 8-10 petals Sacred lotus Nelumbo nucifera
- 1-2 teaspoons Honey
- 250 ml Water
- Take a fresh sacred lotus flower (pink lotus), honey or palm sugar and water.
- Separate the petals from the flower.
- Tear the petals into smaller pieces.
- Take water in a vessel and allow to boil.
- Add the flower petals to boiling water.
- Allow to boil well till the petals turn to a leafy green colour.
- Switch off.
- Pour into a cup.
- Add 1 or 2 teaspoons of honey and stir well.
