Chest phlegm is caused by respiratory system infections. Kids suffer a lot if they get cold and chest phlegm. The upper respiratory tract is lined with mucus membranes and when it affected by dust, chemicals, pollen and pet dander the mucosa cells become inflamed and they produce thick and large amounts of phlegm. The body tries to remove the phlegm through the usual ways like coughing and swallowing it. But sometimes, the phlegm does not get cleared completely and stays inside the airways and lungs, affects free flow of airways in and out lungs resulting in wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath.
Holy basil is one of the powerful and popular home remedies to treat chest phlegm. Take 30 to 40 holy basil leaves, grind and get the extract. Add the holy basil extract and rock sugar to a pan and boil in medium flame until it becomes thick in consistency. Once it becomes thick (syrup form) switch off the flame and allow it to cool.
